Privacy Policy for Naveto

Last updated: 8 September 2026

Naveto is an app for learning German, published by an individual developer. This policy explains exactly what the app does with information, in plain language. The short version: there is no account, the app does not collect your personal information, and everything you do in it stays on your phone apart from the three specific cases described below.

No account, and no profile of you

Naveto has no sign-in, no registration and no user accounts. It never asks for your name, email address, phone number or date of birth, and it has no server of its own that stores anything about you. Nobody, including the developer, can look up what you answered or how you are progressing.

What is stored on your device

Your learning data is written to storage on your phone that belongs to the app alone. This includes:

Uninstalling the app deletes all of it from your device.

The four things that leave your phone

1. Speech recognition, only while you use the speaking exercise

Some exercises invite you to say a German sentence out loud. When you tap the microphone button, Naveto asks Android's own speech recognition service to listen and return text. On most phones this service is provided by Google, and your speech may be sent to Google's servers to be turned into text, under Google's privacy policy rather than this one.

Naveto itself never records, stores or uploads audio. It receives only the text of what the recogniser heard, compares it with the expected sentence, and discards it. The microphone is used only in the moments you tap that button, never in the background. Android asks your permission the first time, and declining is fine — the exercise falls back to marking yourself.

2. Backup of your progress, if your device does it

Naveto allows Android's standard backup system to include your learning progress, so that a new or reset phone can restore where you were. If Android Backup is switched on for your device, that data is copied to your own Google Drive account, where it counts against your storage and is governed by Google's terms. It is your backup, in your account; the developer has no access to it.

You can turn this off in your phone's own settings, usually under System → Backup. You can also export a backup file yourself from Profile → Your progress, which puts a copy wherever you choose. Files you export are entirely under your control.

3. Crash reports

Naveto uses Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, to report crashes. When the app crashes it sends a diagnostic report so the fault can be fixed. A report contains the technical circumstances of the crash — the point in the code where it happened, your device model, operating system version, app version, and a randomly generated installation identifier that distinguishes one installation from another. It does not contain your name, your email, your learning data or anything you typed.

4. Buying access to a level

Some levels of the course can be unlocked with a purchase. The purchase itself happens entirely inside Google Play, under Google's own terms and privacy policy. Naveto never sees your card, your billing address or your name, and it stores no payment information of any kind — Google does not give the app any of that, and the app does not ask.

What the app receives from Google Play is a purchase token: an opaque string that says this installation is entitled to what was bought. The app keeps it on your device so that it can re-check the entitlement with Google Play when it starts.

Google Play does not tell the device when a subscription is due to end, only whether it is currently active. So that the app can behave correctly around renewals and cancellations, the purchase token may be sent to a small verification service run by the developer, which passes it to Google's own Play Developer API and returns the expiry date. That service holds no database and no accounts: it stores nothing at all, it never learns who you are, and the token it receives is one Google already issued for your own purchase. If the service is unreachable, the app falls back to Google Play's on-device answer and keeps working.

If you do not buy anything, none of this happens.

Notifications

If you switch study reminders on, Naveto schedules them on your device. The app also registers with Firebase Cloud Messaging, a Google service, which issues a token identifying this installation so a notification could be delivered to it. Notifications are off until you turn them on, and Android asks your permission at that moment rather than at launch. You can turn them off again at any time in the app or in your phone's settings.

Children

Naveto is intended for adults and older teenagers learning German. It is not directed at children, contains no content aimed at children, and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Your rights

Because the app holds no account and no personal data on any server, there is no stored profile to request, correct or delete. In practice:

If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, crash reporting is carried out on the basis of legitimate interest in keeping the app working, and speech recognition is carried out at your request when you use that feature. You can exercise your rights, or ask any question about this policy, using the contact address below.

Changes to this policy

If the app's handling of information changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it. Substantial changes will also be noted in the app's release notes on Google Play.
